Private Jet Charter 101: What First-Time Flyers Should Know

Flying private for the first time raises the same questions every time: what size aircraft do I need, how far in advance do I book, and how do I keep the trip completely discreet? Here's the short version.

1. Match the aircraft to the mission

The right aircraft depends on route, passenger count, and luggage, not just budget. Getting this wrong is the most common (and most expensive) first-timer mistake.

2. Understand empty legs

An "empty leg" is a repositioning flight with no passengers, often available at a steep discount if your dates and route are flexible. They're a great way to experience private aviation at a lower cost, though availability changes fast.

3. Lead time matters, but so does last-minute access

Ideally, book 48–72 hours ahead for the widest aircraft selection and best pricing. That said, a well-connected charter broker can often source an aircraft same-day when plans change unexpectedly.

4. Discretion is the whole point

Private terminals (FBOs), no security lines, no manifest exposure, and ground transport arranged door-to-door. Every detail is handled so the trip stays exactly as private as it needs to be.

5. Consider aircraft investment & partnerships

For frequent flyers, fractional ownership or aircraft investment can make sense financially. This is handled as a bespoke, special request, since every situation is different.
